Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine || Kyoto, Japan
If you’re planning your trip to Kyoto, I’ll bet you that you’ve had Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine on your bucket list. While it is stunning, it is very crowded and you will have to walk most of the way to the top, if not to the top, for pictures without people in the background.
Please don’t be one of the many * rude * people we came across, making people stop so they could get pictures. Some groups blocked the walkway, which is maybe 2 people wide, and waited till the people in front disappeared from view so they could take pictures. This caused a stop-and-go traffic situation and in the June heat, there is no breeze or airflow in the Torii gates, so it gets very hot.
About mid-way, there is a rest stop where you can order refreshments or souvenirs. This is a great little spot to catch your breath and during the summer, the refreshments are welcoming. I’m not sure if they change out with the seasons, but I can’t imagine them selling shave-ice during the winter.
Unfortunately, we didn’t go all the way to the top. It was hot and humid, irritating not only me but our little toddler who, at the time, was 13 months old and not a strong walker had to be carried. With it being so hot, being against another person the whole time, made her even hotter and sweaty, leading to a very cranky baby.
Kid-Friendly?
If your child doesn’t mind walking or you don’t mind carrying your child, yes. Up to a certain point, you can use your stroller. I don’t recommend using it past the first shrine and up to the gates. After exiting the train station, you’re across the street from the entrance. From that first Torii gate, up the slight hill, off to the right, you’ll see a small cut-out / gap in the wall and you can park your stroller here. It is all outdoors so prep your stroller for whatever the weather situation may be. Parts of the trail are flat, but with the narrow walkway and inevitable stairs, I recommend leaving the stroller behind.
